Sincona sale 90, lot 1178

This specimen was lot 1178 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 1,400 CHF (about US$1,850 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, Louis XIV. 1643-1715. Louis d'or à la mèche longue 1649 F, Angers. Selten. NGC AU58. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold louis of the long lock of 1649, Angers mint. Rare, about uncirculated.)"

This louis d'or à la mèche longue, struck at the Angers mint in small quantities 1648-54, is among the more available louis of Louis XIV. It is still an expensive coin.

Recorded mintage: 1,955[2].

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 24-26 mm diameter, designed by Jean Warin.
