The specimen shown is a demi-écu à la mèche longue struck at Poitiers during the reign of Louis XIV of France. This specimen was lot 29667 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it sold for $881.25. The catalog description[2] noted, "Louis XIV 1/2 Ecu 1649-(9) MS64 NGC, Rennes mint. A remarkable survivor with surfaces that are most appropriately described as "as struck." A hint of tone is detected, but blast-white luster dominates the appearance. In addition to being the finest example we have seen from a technical standpoint and the finest graded of the date, this coin is also currently the plate coin for the type in the NGC World Coin Price Guide." Droulers[1] prices this date about 40% higher than the common date (1655-A).
