SB925-74662r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74662 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/8 Ecu, 1642-M. Toulouse Mint. Louis XIII. PCGS VF-35. From the Richard August Collection." This eighth écu was struck by the hammer at many mints starting in the time of Henry III (1580) and continuing into the reign of Louis XIV (1651). It was supposed to be phased out with the coming of milled coinage but continued for some time after. It is scarce compared to the hammered quarter écus.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.

Specification: 4.85 g, 0.833 fine silver, 24-26 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 111, KM-44.12; Gad-23.
