This specimen was lot 23534 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $3,055. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XIII gold Ecu d'Or 1642-A, MS63 NGC, a handsome mint state example with sharp details and full mint bloom. The surfaces are bright and attractive with exceptional flash. The 2 in the date is clearly cut over a 1, not mentioned on the holder and not listed in the SCWC. From The Formosa Collection." Shown is a écu d'or au moulin (milled gold écu) struck at the Paris mint in the last years before the switch to milled coinage in the 1640's. This type was struck at numerous French mints 1611-43, i.e., Louis' entire reign. These coins were usually struck with the hammer and were supposed to be phased out with the introduction of milled coinage in 1640 but écus d'or are known dated as late as 1654.
