Goldberg sale 128, lot 1744
G128-1744r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1744 in Goldberg sale 128 (Los Angeles, June 2022), where it sold for $300. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. ½ Franc, 1641-N (Montpellier). Louis XIII, 1610-1643. Laureate head right draped and cuirassed, with turned-down collar. Reverse: Floriated cross, L in the center. PCGS graded Very Fine Detail (Tooled)." This type is listed for Montpellier, Troyes and Aix for 1636-41. It is sometimes nicknamed the demi-franc mousquetaire as the collar the king is wearing was the same as that sported by the musketeers. This denomination was struck throughout the king's reign and each mint used a slightly different bust. These are not usually found heavily worn; the bad details result from bad dies and bad strikes. It had a face value of 10 sols 8 deniers during the reign of Henry IV, which was raised to 13 sols 6 deniers in 1636.

Recorded mintage: 159,026[2].

Specification: 7.09 g, 0.833 fine silver, plain edge, 27-29 mm diameter, designed by Darmand Lorfelin.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 58, Dr/2 № 59, KM-118.2; Gad-41.
