This specimen was lot 99019 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XIII Quinzain (15 Deniers) 1641-A VF Details (Environmental Damage) NGC, Paris mint. A verifiably scarce billon issue appearing at auction in comparable tiers of preservation once every year or two, and witnessed dressed in a soft pewter appearance and allover porosity, the likely cause of the conditional qualifier." In 1640, the government ordered that a wide variety of billon coins from previous reigns be countermarked to raise their value from twelve to fifteen deniers. In 1641, a contract was let to melt all the old coinage (mostly worn and clipped) to produce this quinzain. Disputes between the contractors and the actual minting personnel and difficulties with the alloy caused the project to be abandoned. Droulers[2] notes that perhaps five or six examples exist.

Recorded mintage: 1,040[2].

Specification: 2.40 g, .240 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 133A, Dr/2 № 113, KM 116, Gad-22 (R5), Dupl-1344.
