France 1611-StP 1/4 ecu
This specimen was lot 73004 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/4 Ecu, 1611-C. Saint Lo Mint. Louis XIII. NGC AU-55. Endowed with wonderful and consistent magenta gray cabinet tone, both sides exhibit ample original luster and very little wear across the high points. A seldom encountered issue that is truly the most specialists could ask for. Ex: Pittman Collection." This quarter écu was struck not at St.-Lo but at St. Palais in the Pyrenees. Dates range 1610-32. Some have mintmaster's initial "M" but not this one, so far as we can tell. Reverse legend: GRATIA.DEI.SVM.ID.Q.SVM = "By the grace of God, I am what I am."
Recorded mintage: unknown[2].
Specification: 9.71 g, 0.917 fine silver, 26-31 mm diameter, plain edge or no edge.
