Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 41109
SB0123-41109r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41109 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/4 Ecu, 1603-R. Villeneuve St. Andre Mint. Henri IV. NGC MS-62. Ex: Fernand David Collection." The quart d'écu was introduced in 1578 and superseded the testons and demi-testons struck since the reign of Francis I. If uniformity of design was the aim, it failed as the mints displayed a considerable diversity of dies. This mint, along with Tours ("E"), Poitiers ("G") and Aix ("&"), put the king's name on the shield side while the rest put the king's name on the cross side. The cross here shows leafy elements on the ends ("feuillue"), while others show lilies ("fleurdelisée) or crowns ("couronnée").

Recorded mintage: 183,027 including a few eighth écus.

Specification: 9.71 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 9.59 g.

Catalog reference: Sb 4698 (15 examples reported), Dupl-1228, KM-27.4.
