Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74491

This specimen was lot 74491 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/4 Ecu, 1603(9). Rennes Mint. Henri IV. NGC MS-62. A bright white coin with mostly clear legends and an exceptionally strong obverse strike. Few of this type have been certified Mint State." This specimen was struck by the hammer at Rennes during the reign of Henry IV, founder of the Bourbon dynasty (1589-1793). This was the largest silver coin regularly struck in France prior to the introduction of milled coinage in the 1640's.
