Steve Album Auction 52, lot 2530

This specimen was lot 2530 in Steve Album Auction 52 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2025), where it sold for $90. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE: Charles X, 1589-1590, AR ¼ ecu, 1592-B, Rouen Mint, rough surfaces, VF Charles X was the anti-king of France created by the Catholic League after the death of Henri III. He belonged to the clergy and was a cardinal of the Roman Church. However, he was unable to assert himself against his nephew Henri IV and was routed by an uprising of the Parisian masses." Charles X was actually the pretender put up by the Catholic League in opposition to Henry IV, who had converted from Protestantism. This Cardinal never ruled France as he was a prisoner of Henry IV. This was the largest silver coin regularly struck prior to the introduction of milled coinage in the 1640's. It had a face value of fifteen sols tournois.
