Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1048

This specimen was lot 1048 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €170 (about US$242 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XII (1498-1515), billon douzain au porc-épic de Bretagne, Nantes. 2e type. D/ Ecu de France sous une couronnelle, entre deux mouchetures couronnées, posé sur un porc-épic. R/ Croix échancrée, cantonnée de quatre mouchetures couronnées. Beau à Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XII (1498-1515), billon douzain of the porcupine of Brittany, Nantes mint, second type. Obverse: crowned arms of France between two crowned ermines over a porcupine; reverse: cross cantonned with four crowned ermines. Fine - Very Fine.)"

This douzain was produced at Nantes for the province of Brittany. It was worth twelve deniers tournois, the same as the grand blanc, and is often confused with it. The porcupine was the king's personal badge and the ermine was the badge of Brittany.
