France (1365) franc Fr-284
The first specimen was lot 20150 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Franc à Pied, ND (20 April 1365). Charles V (1364-80). NGC MS-63. An appealing gothic style piece with fleur de lis in nearly every available space of the design. Good strike from slightly rusty dies with good definition of the design features and nearly full complete legends. Only slight weakness at 3 o'clock of the obverse and corresponding reverse with minimal tops of letters off the planchet mentioned for accuracy. A lovely example stylistically with light attractive tone." Duplessy notes that this type had a face value of 20 sols tournois. It was struck at numerous mints but only Limoges (L), Poitiers (P) and La Rochelle (R) added mintmarks. It was called a franc à pied in contrast to the franc à cheval (Fr-285) of earlier in the reign, which showed the king on horseback.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 1.000 fine gold, 3.82 g; the first specimen 3.79 g.
