Ligny and St.-Pol (1367-71) franc Fr-135
This specimen was lot 993 in Jean Elsen sale 143 (Brussels, December 2019), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,133 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"CAMBRESIS, comtés de Ligny et Saint-Pol, Gui de Luxembourg (1367-1371), AR franc à pied. D/ GVIDO DE LVCEN-BOVRC COS' D LINI Le comte deb. sous un dais, ten. une épée et une main de justice. Le champ semé de lis. R/ (lion) XPC VINCIT XPC REGNAT XPC INPERAT Dans un quadrilobe anglé, croix fleuronnée cantonnée de deux couronnes et deux lis. Très rare. Très Beau à Superbe. (county of Ligny and St. Pol, Guy of Luxembourg, 1367-71, gold franc à pied. Obverse: the count enthroned under a dais, holding a sword and the hand of justice, the field scattered with lilies. Obverse: a floriate cross in a quadrilobe, cantonned with tow crowns and two lilies. Very rare, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"
St.-Pol is now a suburb of Dunkirk in France; six centuries ago, it was part of Flanders and the Burgundian inheritance. The count also issued a franc à cheval (Fr-135a).
