This specimen was lot 20143 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $4,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Royal d'Or, ND (1328). Philip VI de Valois (1328-50). NGC MS-63. Boldly struck on a good planchet with powerful luster. All of the minute detail is clearly defined, full legends on both sides and a superior example of this issue." Duplessy notes that this type had a face value of 25 sols tournois. Other gold coins listed for Philip VI include parisis d'or (25 sols), lion d'or (25 sols), pavillion d'or (25 sols), chaise d'or (16 to 20 sols), écu d'or (20 sols), ange d'or (75 sols) and couronne d'or (40 sols). Only the écu d'or is reasonably common.
