Jean Elsen sale 159, lot 501

This specimen was lot 501 in Jean Elsen sale 159 (Brussels, June 2024), where it sold for €70 (about US$90 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Philippe VI de Valois (1328-1350), AR maille blanche, mai 1328. D/ Croix pattée. Légende intérieure: PHILIPPVS REX. R/ FRANCORVM Châtel tournois. Rare. Différents: annelet au droit et étoile au revers. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Philip of Valois, 1328-50, silver white maille, May 1328. Obverse: cross pattée; reverse: castle of Tours. Rare, privy marks ring on obverse and star on the reverse; very fine.)"

This coin had a face value of eight deniers tournois. While many coins of the period had multiple emissions, reflecting various debasements, this type has only one emission. It does not come with mintmarks.
