The first specimen was part of lot 2245 in Goldberg's NY International sale 59 (New York, January 2023), which sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lot of three high-grade AEs: All authenticated and graded by NGC – 10 Penniä 1916. MS 65 RB; Penni 1916. MS 65 RD; Civil War issue. Penni 1917. MS 63 RB. (Lot of 3)." This type was struck by the Kerenski government after the tsar had abdicated and before the Finns declared independence. It lacks a crown over the eagle. Russian defeats in World War One enabled the Finns, who had long chafed under Russian rule, to declare independence.

Recorded mintage: 1,650,000.

Specification: 1.28 g, copper, 15 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 16.
