Falkland Islands 1983 50 pence
This specimen was lot 31042 in Heritage auction 3096 (Dallas, TX, March 2021), where it sold for $21,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Falkland Islands: British Colony. Elizabeth II gold Proof "150th Anniversary of British Rule" 50 Pence 1983 PR68 Ultra Cameo NGC. Commemorating the 150th anniversary of British rule in the Falklands. A magnificent example of this modern rarity, tied for the second finest at NGC, with a single finer. Depicting the sailing vessel Desire, which first sighted the islands in 1592. From the Paramount Collection." This is the fourth in a series of NCLT's issued in this format, all struck in copper-nickel, silver and gold. Only 3,400 people live in the Falklands so it seems unlikely that this coin circulated there.
Recorded mintage: 50,000 in copper-nickel, 10,000 in silver and 150 in gold.
Specification: KM 19: 28.28 g, copper-nickel, 38.6 mm diameter; KM 19a: 28.28 g, 0.925 fine silver; KM 19b: 47.54 g, 0.917 fine gold, AGW 1.401 oz.
