Steve Album sale 30, lot 1157
England SA30-1157r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1157 in Stephen Album sale 30 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2018), where it sold for $141. The catalog description[1] noted, "ENGLAND: Elizabeth I, 1558-1603, AR sixpence, 1594, sixth issue, a few small field marks, woolpack mintmark, Fine to VF." The government experimented with milled coinage in the 1560's but reverted to hammered coinage when output was too slow. The woolpack mintmark was used 1594-6. The shilling was 96 grains, 0.925 fine, so we have assigned this a weight of 48 grains. This type is priced about the same as other sixpences (S.2561, 2572, 2585).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.925 fine silver, 48 grains.

Catalog reference: Spink-2578B.
