SB824-46294r.jpg

This specimen was lot 46294 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 6 Pence, 1593. London Mint; im: tun. Elizabeth I. PCGS VF-30. Sixth issue." The government experimented with milled coinage in the 1560's but reverted to hammered coinage when output was too slow. The tun mintmark was used 1593-94. The shilling was 96 grains, 0.925 fine, so we have assigned this a weight of 48 grains. This type is priced about the same as other sixpences (S.2561, 2572, 2585).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.01 g, 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: S-2578B; N-2015.
