England (1531-44) halfgroat
The first specimen was lot 1461 in Stephen Album sale 45 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2023), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "ENGLAND: Henry VIII, 1509-1547, AR halfgroat, York, ND (1531-44), second coinage, under Archbishop Edward Lee, crowned bust right // coat-of-arms over long cross fourchée with flanking EL, mintmark key, attractive light toning, Fine to VF, ex Joe Sedillot Collection." The second specimen was lot 74625 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[2] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 1/2 Groat, ND (1530-44). York Mint; mm: Key. Henry VIII. PCGS AU-50. Second coinage, under Archbishop Edward Lee. Obverse: Crowned and mantled bust right; Reverse: Coat-of-arms over long cross fourchee; L-E across field. A lightly handled and lightly toned minor from a rather popular reign." This is the most common halfgroat of the second coinage of Henry VIII.
