Sincona sale 79, lot 1052

This specimen was lot 1052 in Sincona sale 79 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 6,000 CHF (about US$7,191 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich, Henry VII. 1485-1509. Angel n. d. (1493-1495), Tower Mint. Class III. New type, Angel with both feet on dragon. Mintmark escallop. NGC AU53." The angel was one-third of a pound or six shillings eight pence. The denomination was introduced in the reign of Edward IV to replace the gold noble and was struck until the reign of Charles I. Many varieties and mintmarks exist for Henry VII. This is a better variety.
