England (1377-99) 1/2 noble Fr-101
The first specimen was lot 17 in Sincona sale 75 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 7,500 CHF (about US$9,104 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Grossbritannien | Königreich. Richard II. 1377-1399. 1/2 Noble n. d. (1377-1399), London. Type IA. Mintmark cross pattée. Altered dies of Edward III. Sehr selten. NGC AU55. (Very rare.)" The second specimen was lot 1023 in Sincona sale 79 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,199 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich, Richard II. 1377-1399. 1/2 Noble n. d. (1377-1399), Calais. Type IIIB. Mintmark cross pattée. Saltire by rudder. French title resumed. Very rare. NGC AU Details. Holed." The half nobles of Richard II, the last of the Plantagenets, were all struck to the standard of the previous Edward III. They are all of one basic type with many minor variations. Calais issues (see the second specimen) obtain a premium.
