El Salvador 1896-CAM peso
This specimen was lot 41215 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "EL SALVADOR. Peso, 1896-CAM. San Salvador Mint. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, EF Details. An undisputed KEY DATE in the series, with the San Salvador Mint ceasing production in January of 1896, only a few hundred examples of this date were produced. Despite evidence of cleaning, details remain strong, with moderate circulation. This example compares favorabl[y] to the last two examples of this date to surface, a far inferior NGC VG Details example which brought $1,200 hammer in 2023 and a raw example described as "Lightly Cleaned F-VF" which brought $2,200 hammer in 2022. Given the RARITY, and relatively presentable nature of the piece, we have high expectations for this example." This type was struck at Brussels and Philadelphia 1892-96 and 1904-14 with a few struck locally, as here. The 1896 and 1914 are the rare dates.
Recorded mintage: "a few hundred", per the SCWC.
Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter.
