El Salvador 1893 centavo
This specimen was lot 2153 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,292 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"EL SALVADOR, République (1839-), AR centavo, 1893. Rare. Très Beau à Superbe. (republic of El Salvador, since 1839,copper centavo of 1893. Rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"
This type was struck 1892-93. The 1893 has the larger mintage but is scarcer as it was never issued for circulation. The series of 1892 included a centavo (bronze, shown here), five, ten, twenty and fifty centavos (silver), one peso, and various gold pieces (all very rare).
Recorded mintage: 446,000 but never issued.
