El Salvador 1832-RL 2 reales
The first specimen was lot 20400 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "EL SALVADOR. 2 Reales, 1832-RL. San Salvador Mint. NGC AU-55. Provisional issue. "POR LA LIBERTAD DEL SALVADOR". Far superior to what is normally encountered for this normally crude, well worn issue. Nice strike with light attractive tone and strong underlying luster." Numerous varieties (KM 11.2, 11.3, 11.4, 11.5, 11.16) exist of this crude type, whose debased alloy made it immediately unpopular. The second specimen was lot 1113 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[2] noted, "EL SALVADOR, San Salvador, provisional 2 reales, 1832 RL, SALVADOR, solid circle, NGC XF 40. Lightly rainbow toned over muted luster, the legends bold but centers rather weakly struck (in fact more like choice AU in our opinion but net-graded for strike), volcano side off-center."
