El Salvador SB819-20400r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20400 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "EL SALVADOR. 2 Reales, 1832-RL. San Salvador Mint. NGC AU-55. Provisional issue. "POR LA LIBERTAD DEL SALVADOR". Far superior to what is normally encountered for this normally crude, well worn issue. Nice strike with light attractive tone and strong underlying luster." Numerous varieties (KM 11.2, 11.3, 11.4, 11.5, 11.16) exist of this crude type, whose debased alloy made it immediately unpopular.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.7 g, 0.750 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-11.3.
