The specimen shown is from a series of debased four reales struck in 1828 while El Salvador was part of the Central American Republic. All provisional four reales of this type are very rare. It was lot 9105 in Ponterio sale 151 (Baltimore, November 2009), where it sold for $3,565. The catalog description[1] noted, "EL SALVADOR. Provisional Coinage. 4 Reales, (1828-F). R-Retrograde 4. Obverse: (POR LA) LIBERTAD . SALU (10Ds 20Gs) Reverse: MONEDA . PRO(VISIONAL 1828 F) EXTREMELY RARE type that was not present in the Norweb, Whittier or Foerster. Uneven strike, lightly grainy surface. Crude as usual. FINE."
