This specimen was lot 24684 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $2,115. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Eichstatt. Sede Vacante Taler 1781-KR, AU55 NGC. One-year type. A pleasing example of this intricately designed taler with light golden coloration atop lustrous surfaces. Scarce this fine."

The bishopric of Eichstatt, now in Bavaria, occasionally issued coins. This thaler minted in Nuremberg is a "Sede vacante" (vacant seat) thaler which was issued on the occasion of the death of the incumbent bishop (or pope) and prior to the elevation of his successor.

  • Obverse description: Cathedral Chapter's coat of arms in cartouche with arms of two clergy members of the rank of canon below {Left = Provost Baron of Kagenegg, Right = Dean Johann Anton von Zehmen (Became Bishop)}, date below, all dividing mint warden's and mint master's initials, all surrounded by thirteen coat of arms of the other clergy members of the rank of canon decorated with fleur des lis between {Clockwise from 12 o’clock position: #1 Scholastic Count of Öttingen, #2 Cellarer Baron of Andlau, #3 E.   • Reverse description: View of the city center with the cathedral, bishop's residence, and Marian column in shell fountain with engraver's initial to the right near the edge of the coin, all beneath an altar canopy with the two patron saints of the bishopric on top, on the left Saint Willibald seated holding a book and crosier to the left with his name to the left, on the right St. Walburga kneeling holds an oil flask above a Bible in her hands with a crozier leaning against the crook of her arm with her name to the right, between them the coat of arms of the bishopric with secondary legend below, above the Eye of God in triangle representing the Holy Trinity all in rays.
