The coin shown is a silver akcheh from the reign of Sultan Selim I. It was one of the first coins struck by the Ottomans at the Cairo Mint. The date is AH 923 (only the "23" is easily visible), which translates to about 1517 AD, the year that Selim I conquered the Mamluks and added Egypt to the Ottoman Empire.

The specimen shown was lot 13132 on Sept 9, 2004 at the 2004 September (HWCA) Signature Sale #357, for $241.50. The catalog description reads "Selim I silver Akcheh 923AH (1517), the first Ottoman issue of Egypt struck at the Cairo mint (Misr) following the conquest of the Mamluks in this year. This denomination can also be referred to as a small dirham, as it was struck in the same style and weight as the current Mamluk type. Crude VF with a remarkably clear date. Rare and very important issue. Olcer 9647. From the Lake Pearl Middle Eastern Collection."
