Egypt AH 910 dinar
This specimen was lot 872 in Sincona sale 92 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 225 CHF (about US$312 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ISLAMISCHE MÜNZEN Bahri Mamluks, Qânsûh II al-Ghûrî (al-Ashraf Abû’l-Nasr), 906-922 AH (1501-1516). Ashrafi 910/911 AH (1504/1505 or 1505/1506), no mint. Sehr schön, Very Fine."
Friedberg does not list the gold coins of the Mamelukes, who preceded the Ottomans in Egypt. We have called this coin a dinar, the usual name for medieval Egyptian gold coins. By this time, the Mamluk sultanate was in an advanced state of decay and was unable to prevent Ottoman conquest in 1516-17.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: gold, this specimen 3.35 g.
