Steve Album sale 54, lot 419

This specimen was lot 419 in Steve Album Auction 54 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2026), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "BAHRI MAMLUK: Sha'ban II, 1363-1376, AV dinar, Halab, AH773, fully legible mint & date; scalloped border both sides, VF-XF." Aleppo was held by the Mamluks 1260-1516 despite Mongol invasions (1260, 1280, 1299) and Timur's attack (1400). Wikipedia comments,

"Al-Ashraf Zayn ad-Din Abu al-Ma'ali Sha'ban ibn Husayn ibn Muhammad ibn Qalawun (Arabic: الأشرف زين الدين شعبان, lit. 'The Most Noble, Grace of the Faith, Father of Excellence, Sha'ban son of Husayn, son of Muhammad, son of Qalawun', better known as al-Ashraf Sha'ban (السلطان شعبان or Sha'ban II, was a Turk Mamluk sultan of the Bahri dynasty in 1363–1377."

Sha'ban II, aged 23-24 years in 1377, was strangled by one of his emirs. His son, al-Mansur Ali II, died in 1381, aged 13.
