The coin shown is a gold five qirsh from the reign of Sultan Abdul Aziz. It was struck at the Cairo Mint. The obverse bears the toughra, or signature, of the sultan, with the denomination written below (abbreviated as the letter 'sh' for qirsh) with the number 5 above. A crude floral design sits right of the toughra. The reverse carries the accession date and the text minted in Misr (Misr is Arabic for Egypt). The date is written as AH 1277 year 12, which translates to about 1871 AD.

The first specimen was lot 2369 in Sincona sale 59 (Zürich, October 2019), where it sold for 90 CHF (about US$109 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"OSMANISCHES REICH | ´Abd al-´Azîz, 1277-1293 H./1861-1876 AD, 5 Kurush 1277 H./Jahr 12, Misr (Kairo). Tughra mit Blume über Wertangabe, Regierungsjahr, Münzstättenangabe und Datum des Regierungsanfangs. Vorzüglich-FDC. (Turkey, Abdul Aziz, 1861-76, five qirsh of AH 1277, year 12, Cairo mint. Extremely fine-uncirculated.)"

The second specimen was lot 74536 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[2] noted, "EGYPT. Ottoman Empire. 5 Qirsh, AH 1277 Year 12 (1871). Misr (Cairo) Mint. Abdul Aziz. NGC MS-62."

Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.

Specification: 0.420 g, 0.875 fine gold, 0.0118 troy oz AGW. This specimen 0.40 g.
