Egypt AH 1171/83 (1183) 1 zeri mahbub
This coin is a gold zeri mahbub, struck during the reign of Mustafa III (1757-1774 AD). The date AH 1171//83 which translates to 1769 AD. During this period, coins minted in Egypt were very similar in appearance to those struck in other parts of the Ottoman Empire. The obverse features the royal cypher of the sultan.
This specimen was lot 13168 in the 2004 September (HWCA) Signature Sale #357 by Heritage Auctions. It sold on Sept 9, 2004 for $805. The catalog description noted, "Ali Bey gold Zeri Mahbub 1171/83 = 1183AH (1769), bold XF, very clear 'Ali" at the top of the obverse. This series features the tughra of the Ottoman Sultan, Mustafa III, and his accession date, 1171AH, but Ali Bey added his name to this coinage during his rebellion, 1183-1185AH. Rare and important type. From the Lake Pearl Middle Eastern Collection."
