Sincona sale 59, lot 2281

This specimen was lot 2281 in Sincona sale 59 (Zürich, October 2019), where it sold for 180 CHF (about US$218 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"OSMANISCHES REICH | Mustafâ III. 1171-1187 H./1757-1774 AD, 1 Zer-i mahbûb 1171 H./Jahr 6, Misr (Kairo). Im Rev. mîm-dâl über dem Wort ibn als Zeichen des Walî Ahmad Pâshâ Kâmil, 1174-1175 H., Tughra über Segenswunsch, Mzst. und Jahr, Rv. Titel mit Walizeichen und Regierungsjahr über dem Wort ibn am Ende der dritten Zeile l. Gerändelt. Sultan coll. 1239 mit Zuweisung der Walimarke nach Ahmad as-Sâwî. Vorzüglich. (Turkey, Mustafa III, 1757-74, zeri mahbub of AH 1171, year 6, Cairo mint. On the reverse, the character "mîm-dâl", indicating vizier Ahmad Kamil Pasha. Obverse: toughra over blessing, mintmark and date; reverse: titles, the vizier's sign and the accession date. Milled, Extremely fine.)"

This coin is a gold zeri mahbub, struck during the reign of Mustafa III (1757-1774 AD). The date AH 1171(6) translates to 1762 AD. During this period, coins minted in Egypt were very similar in appearance to those struck in other parts of the Ottoman Empire. The obverse features the royal cypher of the sultan.
