The coin shown is a five franc Suez Canal Token, issued by Societe Cooperative du Canal de Suez. These tokens were issued during the construction of the Suez Canal for use as money by company employees. Construction of the canal began in 1859 and completed in 1869. The obverse features a ship, presumably passing through the future canal, and the issuer and denomination on the reverse. All script is in French. No mintage and no prices are listed for this issue in the SCWC, which indicates its degree of rarity.

This token was lot 7638 and sold on Jan 8, 2010 at the 2010 N.Y.I.N.C. Auction by Stacks Bowers Galleries for $2100. The catalog description[1] reads: "EGYPT. 5 Francs, 1892. Aluminum. Issued by Societe Cooperative du Canal de Suez. VERY RARE. PCGS AU-50."

Recorded mintage: unknown.
