The coin shown is a one franc Suez Canal Token, issued by Borel Lavalley et Cie. These tokens were issued during the construction of the Suez Canal for use as money by company employees. Construction of the canal began in 1859 and completed in 1869. Obverse features a ship, presumably passing through the future canal, and the issuer and denomination on the reverse. All script is in French.

This token was part of lot 5417 and sold on Jan 3, 2008 at the 2008 Baltimore Auction by Stacks Bowers Galleries for $800. The catalog description reads: "Egypt. Suez Canal. French Concession (1859-69). Borel Lavalley & Co. Brass 1 Franc and 20 Centimes Tokens. 1865. Obv: sailing clipper in circle. Rev: value in circle. Both EF. (2 pcs)."
