Sedwick sale 12, lot 1414

This specimen was lot 1414 in Sedwick sale 12 (Winter Park, FL, October 2012), where it sold for $153.40. The catalog description[1] noted, "Quito, Ecuador, 2 reales, 1852GJ. Golden-toned VF, hint of luster at rim, slightly irregular shape (as made)." This type was struck in Quito during 1847-52. It is one of a series struck 1847-52. It is scarce, but not rare, but its strong resemblance to a United States bust quarter of the years 1831-38 increases demand for it and it routinely yields over catalog value in auctions. All pre-decimal Ecuadorian coinage is hard to find and hotly pursued.

Recorded mintage: unknown but reasonably common.

Specification: 5.5-6.05 g, 0.667 fine silver. this specimen 6.2 grams.

Catalog reference: KM-33.
