This specimen was lot 170 in Sedwick sale 12 (Winter Park, FL, October 2012), where it sold for $5,900. The catalog description[1] noted, "Quito, Ecuador, 8 escudos, 1852/0GJ. Popular issue with head of Bolivar, this specimen AXF with deep rainbow-toning all over, no problems, very eye-catching and desirable in the current market." This type was struck 1847-55 but like all predecimal Ecuadorian gold coins, remains beyond the reach of ordinary collectors. Only the overdate is known.
