Ecuador 1842-MV S 1/4 real
This specimen was lot 20371 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "ECUADOR. 1/4 Real, 1842-MV S. Quito Mint. NGC VF Details--Environmental Damage. Coin alignment. VERY RARE, estimated 6 to 7 known for the date. The decree to authorize minting of the 1/4 Reales was not issued until September of 1842, hence not many were made and only a handful have survived in any condition. Struck in 0.333 fine bilon, and with light corrosion resulting from this highly impure alloy. Missing from nearly all collections of Ecuadorian coinage." This scarce type is listed for 1842-43 with "MV" and "MV S" both listed for 1842.
