East Germany 1967 20 mark
This specimen was lot 2994 in Sincona sale 26 (Zürich, October 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Deutsche Demokratische Republik, 20 Mark 1967. Berlin Zum 200. Geburtstag von Wilhelm von Humboldt. Mit Randschrift: 20 MARK * 20 MARK * 20 MARK *. Selten. Vorzüglich-FDC (East Germany, twenty mark of 1967, Berlin mint, on the bicentennial of the birth of William von Humboldt, with ettered edge. Scarce, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This issue from the Communist regime of East Germany commemorates the bicentennial of the birth of scientist and traveler Wilhelm von Humboldt. Most (KM 18.1) were minted with the edge lettered "* 20 MARK DER DEUTSCHEN NOTENBANK" but a few were lettered "20 MARK * 20 MARK * 20 MARK *". This standard was used for several commemoratives issued 1966-90. A number of copper-nickel types were also issued for circulation.
Specification: 20.9 g, 0.625 fine silver, .420 troy oz ASW, edge lettered 20 MARK; this specimen 20.83 g.
Recorded Mintage: 97,000 (KM 18.1) plus 3,000 (KM 18.2).
