This specimen was lot 71052 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $60. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. PORTUGUESE INDIA. Diu. Bazaruco, 1698. Peter II (1683-1706). PCGS VF-20 Secure Holder. From a type struck locally 1686-89 and 1697-98. Crude strike on a rough planchet as is normal for this issue. Attractive milk chocolate patina." The Portuguese were the first European power to make direct contact with India. They concentrated on trade but were not above piracy or political meddling if the opportunity arose. They conquered or dominated a good part of India in the sixteenth century but gradually had to yield to others, especially the British. By 1778, Portuguese holdings were limited to Diu, Damao and Goa. Each had a mint which struck hammered coinage until the 1860's. This bazaruco was struck 1686-89, 1697-98. Forty atia = one rupee = 600 reis = 750 bazarucos.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 7.5 g, copper.
