Denmark H3064-32704r.jpg

This specimen was struck during the reign of Christian X (1912-47). The Scandinavian countries (Norway, Denmark and Sweden) formed their own monetary union in competition with the Latin Monetary Union based on the French twenty francs d'or. Like that union, the Scandinavian Monetary Union lasted until World War One blasted all hard currencies out of existence. The twenty kroner shown here was issued 1913-17, after which no more gold coins were issued for circulation. This specimen was lot 32704 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "Christian X gold 20 Kroner 1914 (h)-AH/GJ UNC Details (Scratches) NGC, Copenhagen mint. Though an unfortunate scratch crosses the back of the king's bust, the clean surfaces on the reverse and the semi-reflective luster of both faces more than provides the prospective buyer with the impetus to make this exciting purchase."

Recorded mintage: 920,000.

Specification: 8.96 g, 0.900 fine gold, .259 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 817.1.
