Stack's Bowers May 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71738
SB523-71738r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71738 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. Skilling, 1809-MF. Altona Mint. Frederik VI. NGC MS-64. A delightful near Gem with bright pastel-rainbow iridescence throughout. The strike is bold to full, without any sign of weakness to speak of. From a 4 year type seldom encountered in high grade, this piece is ideal for discerning type collectors." This two year type, like many European minors, is scandalously undervalued. At the time, the monetary system was 12 penning = 1 skilling, 16 skillings = 1 mark, 4 mark = 1 krone, 6 mark = 1 daler specie, 2 daler specie = 1 ducat.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.92 g, 0.138 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-662; Hede-7; Sieg-1.1; Schou-10; Bruun-8004.
