Künker sale 400, lot 450

This specimen was lot 450 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €20,000 (about US$25,946 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DÄNEMARK, KÖNIGREICH, Christian VII. 1766-1808. Kurant-Dukat 1771, Kopenhagen, auf seinen 22. Geburtstag am 29. Januar. Geburtstagsdukat mit dem Motto des Königs: * GLORIA · EX · AMORE · PATRIÆ *. Münzmeister Hans Schierven Knoph. CHRIST · VII · D · G · REX · DAN · NOR · VAN · GOT · Uniformiertes Brustbild r. mit hoher Perücke//Lorbeerkranz, darin Schrift: DEN / o 29 o / IANUA / RII ·, unten Jahreszahl 17 - 71 zwischen K ·. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 64* (Top Pop) (5783259-006). GOLD. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Nur 131 Stück geprägt. Kabinettstück. Fast Stempelglanz. (kingdom of Denmark, Christian VII, 1766-1808, ducat courant of 1771, Copenhagen mint, on the king's 22nd birthday on January 29. Obverse: peruked uniformed bust of the king right; reverse: date, wreath around. Graded NGC MS64, very rare, especially in this condition. Only 131 pieces minted, cabinet piece, almost uncirculated.)"

Altho the this coin quacks like a ducat, it is too light and too low in fineness to qualify. It was actually a twelve mark altho the government called them "ducats courant" in the hopes that merchants would accept them as full ducats. It is unlikely anyone was fooled for long. Until 1813, one ducat = 2 speciedaler = 12 mark = 192 skilling Danske. Other varieties for 1783 include KM 641.1 (1783-CHL, no B below bust) and KM 641.3 (1783-HSK). The denomination was last struck in 1785.
