This specimen was lot 1156 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €23,400 (about US$25,932 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Entrancingly Engraved and Wonderfully Executed Christian d'Or in Premium Gem Condition, DENMARK. Christian d'Or, ND (1771). Altona Mint. Christian VII. NGC MS-66. Mintmaster: Hans Schivern Knoph. Engraver: Johan Henrik Wolff (W) from a design by Johannes Wiedewelt. A marvelously attractive premium Gem, this Christian d'Or displays bright luster and sharply delineated details throughout. A piece largely without discernible fault, and as such, a golden example that stands near the pinnacle of desirability and attractiveness.

This coin marks the beginning of the Christian and Frederik d'or coinage which continued up until decimalization in 1873. The coins were intended for and mainly used in international transactions, and all are coveted by collectors in Denmark and abroad."

This undated issue is likely a pattern. It was struck again dated 1775. This denomination was designed to pass for a friedrichs d'or. Hans Schierwen Knoph was mintmaster in Copenhagen 1761-84. Christian VII was insane for most of his reign and the government was in the hands of regents, including his stepmother and later his son. The court was the scene of violent power struggles over who would have access to the incapable king.
