Denmark 1616 mark
This specimen was lot 10177 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Copenhagen, June 2026), where it sold for €414.80 (about US$478). The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. Mark, 1616. Copenhagen Mint. Christian IV. NGC AU-55. Spelling Error. Attractive example with a pleasant toning and minimal wear. Some softness from the strike on both sides. Spelling error in the king's name which reads "CHRISTIAUS" with an "N" missing.. From the L.E. Bruun Collection." This type was struck 1612-18, and this is a better date. There are two mintmarks for this date: crossed scabbards (shown here) = Johan Post; shamrock = Nicolaus Schwabe. Christian IV (r. 1588-1648), king of Denmark and duke of Schleswig-Holstein, had a long but only moderately successful reign. His war with Sweden and his intervention in the Thirty Years War were costly and brought little gain. One speciedaler was four mark, later raised to six mark.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 8.66 g, 0.593 fine silver, 31 mm diameter.
