Denmark 1609 speciedaler Dav-3513
This specimen was lot 10169 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Copenhagen, June 2026), where it sold for €2,684 (about US$3,094). The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. Speciedaler, 1609. Copenhagen Mint. Christian IV. NGC EF Details--Cleaned. Beautiful example of this two-year type displaying a mighty portrait of the king. Some iridescent toning in the obverse legend. The reverse displays the shields of all Danish territories under the crown, symbolizing the unity of the kingdom. From 1624, the crown evolved to a closed shape, further emphasizing the idea of unity under God. From the L.E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Joh. G. Guildal Collection (Private Sale - 1918); later published by the Danish Numismatic Society." This type was struck 1608-09 and, like all early speciedalers, is rare. A similar speciedaler was struck at Helsingør (Dav-3514) without the trefoil mintmark. Christian IV (r. 1588-1648), king of Denmark and duke of Schleswig-Holstein, where this was struck, had a long but only moderately successful reign. His war with Sweden and his intervention in the Thirty Years War were costly and brought little gain. One speciedaler was 96 skilling.
