Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1538

This specimen was lot 1538 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €110 (about US$146 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DANEMARK, Christian IV (1588-1648), AR 1 Mark, 1607, Copenhague. D/ B. cour. et cuir. à d. R/ Ecu posé sur deux palmes, sous la valeur. Griffes. Très Beau. (kingdom of Denmark, Christian IV, 1588-1648, silver mark of 1607, Copenhagen mint. Obverse: crowned and armored bust right; reverse: shield posed with two palms, value below. Very Fine.)"

This type was struck 1607-09, and this is a fairly common date. It was struck at Helsingør (Elsinore), not Copenhagen. Four marks made a speciedaler. There are two mintmarks for this date: rosette over crossed flags (shown here) = Hans Fleming; shamrock = Nicolaus Schwabe.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.15 g, 0.888 fine silver, this specimen 6,05 g.

Catalog reference: KM 36, Hede 93.
