Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection, lot 1014
SB924-1014r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1014 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €57,500 (about US$63,722 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Minted on the Occasion of the King's Wedding to Anna Catherine of Brandenburg, DENMARK. 2 Speciedaler, 1597. Copenhagen Mint. Christian IV. NGC MS-61. Engraved by Nicolaus Schwabe. Bright luster and extraordinary details, paired with limited handling, combine to make this example the best in private ownership. This EXTREMELY RARE type was struck on the occasion of the king's wedding to Anna Catherine, the daughter of Margrave Friedrich of Brandenburg on the 27th of November 1597"

This type was struck again in 1600. It accompanied a single thaler (Dav-8234). Christian IV (r. 1588-1648) had a long but only moderately successful reign. His war with Sweden and his intervention in the Thirty Years War were costly and brought little gain.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 58.56 g, 0.888 fine silver, this specimen 57.46 g.
