Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection, lot 1012
SB924-1012r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1012 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €18,000 (about US$19,948 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Pleasingly Detailed Extremely Rare Goldgulden from the Haderslev Mint, DENMARK. Goldgulden (Ungersk Gylden), 1593. Haderslev Mint; mm: Crescent. Christian IV. NGC AU Details--Cleaned. Mintmaster: Andreas Metzner. EXTREMELY RARE and quite presentable, with the noted cleaning being limited. Struck for the dowager queen, Sophia. The engraver copied the design of the Hungarian model too closely when he showed the elected king Christian wearing a crown although he would not actually be crowned until three years later." This type was also struck in 1591-92. The auctioneers did not mention the obvious 3/2 overdate. Christian IV (r. 1588-1648) had a long but only moderately successful reign. His war with Sweden and his intervention in the Thirty Years War were costly and brought little gain.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.42 g, 0.972 fine gold, this specimen 3.45 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-32; Hede-8B; Sieg-154.2; Schou-3; Harck-9; Bruun-4602.
