Denmark 1583 8 skilling
This specimen was lot 10153 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Copenhagen, June 2026), where it sold for €170.80 (about US$197). The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. 8 Skilling, 1583. Frederiksborg Mint. Frederik II. NGC EF Details--Cleaned. Overdate variety 1583/82. A good example of the earliest milled coinage of Denmark. From the L.E. Bruun Collection." This eight skilling was struck 1582-85 and was equal to 1/12 of a speciedaler or one-third of a mark. The blob between "REX" and "NORW" is the mintmark, an orb. Frederick II ruled 1559-88. Wikipedia comments, "Frederick was, especially in his youth and unlike his father, belligerent and adversarial, aroused by honor and national pride, and so he began his reign auspiciously with a campaign under the aged Johan Rantzau, which reconquered Dithmarschen. However, after miscalculating the cost of the Northern Seven Years' War, he pursued a more prudent foreign policy."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
